Predation of Big Game and Livestock in the Texas Trans-pecos

چکیده
Predation of livestock and big game remains a matter of concern for ranch managers and operators in the Trans-Pecos. Current evidence indicates that mountain lions (Felis concolor), bobcats {Lynx rufus), and coyotes (Canis latrans) are the primary predators involved, although little information is available on bobcats. A gradual shift from sheep to cattle management has resulted in a corresponding decrease in the intensity of predator control efforts for livestock protection. However, potential lease hunting income has renewed predator control efforts for protection of the 3 primary big game species, pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), and desert bighorn sheep {Ovis canadensis mexicana). Available information suggests that predator management efforts can be beneficial to big game populations, especially if conducted in a timely and specific manner. Predator populations do not appear to have been negatively affected overall by recent predator management efforts in the Trans-Pecos. Pages 80-82 in R.E. Masters and J.G. Huggins, eds. Chromosome numbers in Chihuahuan Desert Cactaceae. III. Trans-Pecos Texas.
Chromosome numbers are reported for 112 collections of Cactaceae, including 102 collections of Opuntia. Reports are presented for 33 species in five genera and a total of 36 taxa. Two specimens were sterile. Emphasis was given to the documentation of intraspecific ploidy-level consistencies and differences, because of the current poor state of knowledge about the populational integrity of chrom...
متن کاملForage Establishment, Management, and Utilization Fundamentals
It is critical for managers to understand the basic fundamental differences of managing introduced and rangeland forages. In the eastern part of Texas, introduced species dominate forage-based livestock production systems. As you move west of the IH35 corridor from Denton to San Antonio and then west of IH37 from San Antonio to Corpus Christi, however, you will notice few introduced species are...
متن کاملIntrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation in an Interactive Engineering Game
In this paper, we study intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation in players playing an electrical engineering gaming environment. We used UNTANGLED, a highly interactive game to conduct this study. This game is developed to solve complex mapping problem from electrical engineering using human intuitions. Our goal is to find whether there are differences in the ways anonymous players solved electrical...

New omomyid fossils from the Purple Bench locality of the Devil's Graveyard Formation, middle Eocene (Uintan) of southwest Texas, are described. One specimen represents a new genus and species, herein named Diablomomys dalquesti. This new species is allocated to the tribe Omomyini, sister taxon to Omomys and Chumashius. A second specimen represents a range extension of the Utah species Mytonius...
متن کاملEarly Basin and Range Development in Trans-pecos Texas and Ad3acent Chihuahua: Magmatism and Orientation, Timing, and Style of Extension
Magmatism during early Basin and Range extension in Trans-Pecos Texas consisted of widespread but volumetrically minor alkali basalts (24-17 Ma), an alkalic mafic to intermediate composition stratovolcano (28-27 Ma), and a dominantly rhyolitic, possibly bimodal, caldera complex in adjacent Chihuahua (3128 Ma). This magmatism contrasted sharply with the much more voluminous and compositionally m...
